A Tribute to the Legacy of Teresa Garofalo, VMD :
The Rhoads Six Foundation, established by John and Teresa Garofalo, provides items of comfort to patients living with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, research grants to further understand and treat the illness, and scholarships and awards to veterinary students entering equine medicine programs.
For the Garofalo’s, Rhoads Six was an obvious choice of name for their foundation. During her second round of chemotherapy, Teresa stayed on the Rhoads 6 wing at The Abramson Cancer Center at University of Pennsylvania Hospital. At that same time, a resilient baby foal was born on the Garofalo’s farm. Teresa was able to watch the birth live from the hospital. The foal was named Rhoads Six and affectionately nicknamed “Rhoady.”
Soon after Rhoady was born, John brought Teresa and other patients various items (pillows, soft sheets, quilts, etc.) which provided comfort while away from home. Today, these items—as well as computers and DVD players—are provided to patients during their hospital stay to give them a sense of comfort while undergoing difficult AML chemotherapy treatment.
Dr. Teresa Garofalo is remembered for her joyful spirit, enduring generosity, loving heart and love of life.
